Perspective and Direction of China Studies In the Twenty-First Century

ABSTRACT:

This talk will begin with an examination of three different factors that have helped transform the field of China studies since the 1950s, then use these criteria to look at the changing terrain of Chinese studies in the United States. The talk will then proceed to examine the current status of China studies in the United States. Although empirical research and analysis has been multiplying, the field still lacks the kind of bold intellectual effort necessary to see China’s larger context, much less to anticipate the direction in which China will move.

Throughout China’s history, economic changes have been at the forefront of social and political changes, despite Mao’s effort to change the superstructure as an engine of economic development. China has already begun to open itself up to the influence and lessons of the outside world. As it develops an incentive system capable of maximizing China’s potential and talent, the economic blossoming that has taken place over the past 30 years can be expected to continue in the coming years.

As such, China studies in the coming century require both historical and comparative perspectives. Because of Korea’s position as a critical cultural linchpin between China and Japan, Korean scholars in Chinese studies are well-positioned to take advantage of such a trend. By studying China as part of a comparative study of East Asia, Korean scholars can make great intellectual contributions to understanding China.
