Despite the outbreak of SARS, Shanghai's GDP continued to grow over the first five months of 2003. In May, GDP reached RMB47.56billion (US$5.8billion), up 10.3 percent compared with the same period last year. The increase was due to the rapid growth in the industrial, export and investment sectors, which generated enough income to compensate for the weakness of other sectors such as transportation, tourism and catering.
